Hedayat Didehban, a prominent ranger and winner of the Yahya Award in 2015, shared his experiences of two decades of work in the Khayez protected area in an interview. He spoke about his love for nature and how childhood memories shaped his path. Didehban highlighted the difficulties of his work, such as dealing with poachers, life-threatening situations, and lack of support from the Department of Environment. He also shared memories of arresting poachers and preserving wildlife.
He identified the greatest threats to the Khayez region as habitat destruction, overgrazing, illegal hunting, and development projects like fencing. Didehban also mentioned the decline in the number of professional hunters in recent years due to the younger generation's lack of familiarity with nature. He referred to the wildfires in the region, which occur due to both natural factors and negligence or personal vendettas.
Other conservation efforts included building watering points and installing warning signs at his own expense. He also reported limited cooperation from local residents and called for more attention to the protection of these areas.
Didehban emphasized that media outreach on environmental issues, field activities, and continuous follow-up are the responsibilities of the academic community. He stressed that perseverance and passion are key to success in this field and believes that nature always takes its revenge on those who harm it.
