The Caspian Sea, with its unique biodiversity, unparalleled wetlands, rivers, and
rare plant and animal species, is under increasing threats and various
environmental challenges, which gradually diminish the capacity of this lake. The
Caspian holds significant economic values, including fishery resources, shipping
lines, oil and gas reserves, and tourism. As the largest lake in the world, it is
surrounded by five countries: Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and
Turkmenistan, through which a considerable amount of pollution is introduced
into it. This pollution has irreversible effects on the ecosystem and biodiversity
of the Caspian Sea. Given the critical environmental condition of the Caspian,
this water body has drawn the attention of the United Nations and its Environment
Programme, leading to the establishment of the Framework Convention for the
Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, known as the Tehran
Convention.
