Wetlands around the world have undergone many changes by humans. Seasonal wetlands cover 6% of the planet's surface, but only 11% are protected. The largest area of wetlands in the world is located in Asia, which also has a high rate of human impact. Wetlands are very fertile and rich in biodiversity, especially in developing countries, which are a source of livelihood for local communities and are considered very valuable by many traditional cultures. Dry wetlands decreased by 69 to 75% and coastal wetlands decreased by 62 to 63% in the 20th century. Widespread depletion of wetlands and their ecological status due to human use and land reclamation have led to widespread efforts around the world to protect and rehabilitate them.
