Wetlands are important ecosystems worldwide. However, these habitats are threatened by urbanization. More than 50 percent of the world's population lives in cities, and the evacuation and filling of wetlands and the provision of land for residential areas and urban infrastructure is one of the biggest causes of the loss of this type of wetland.
Urban wetlands are areas that are drained seasonally or permanently. These wetlands are located on urban borders, in and around the suburbs, and include floodplain rivers and plains, lakes, swamps, as well as coastal types such as salt marshes, mangroves, and coral reefs.
It is noteworthy that wetlands are rarely formed in isolation from other waterways. These types of wetlands can be natural, man-made or a combination of both.
