Eskandar Firouz is recognized as one of the most prominent figures in the history of Iran’s environmental conservation. He played a foundational role in establishing the legal, organizational, and executive frameworks for nature protection in the country. Utilizing his advanced education at Yale University and his extensive experience in civil, political, and environmental fields, Firouz brought about a fundamental transformation in the national perspective toward natural resources and ecosystems in Iran. His environmental efforts began in the 1950s with the drafting of hunting regulations and the founding of the Game Council, eventually leading to the establishment of the Department of Environment in the 1970s.
Among his most notable achievements are the drafting of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (1974), the design of Pardisan National Park, the establishment of the National Botanical Garden of Iran, and his instrumental role in the formation of the Ramsar Convention. Firouz also held significant international positions, including Vice President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and board member, contributing to key global environmental discussions such as the Stockholm Conference.
His authorship of scientific works, including Wildlife of Iran and The Complete Fauna of Iran, reflects his commitment to transferring environmental knowledge to future generations. Firouz's scientific, managerial, and ethical legacy remains a lasting model for sustainable development and environmental conservation in Iran and beyond.
