Microplastics and nanoplastics are emerging threats to human health and the environment. Plastics, due to their unique characteristics, such as low cost, high resistance, flexibility, and diverse applications, have become integral to our daily lives. However, the accumulation and incomplete degradation of these materials have led to widespread environmental pollution and posed risks to human health.
Microplastics are defined as plastic particles with a diameter of less than 5 millimeters, while nanoplastics are particles smaller than 100 nanometers. As emerging pollutants, they have raised significant concerns. This article aims to provide practical and useful information for the audience through a literature review method. To address the dangers of these pollutants, the first step is their identification.
Emerging pollutants, by entering various food chains and ultimately the human body, create numerous problems; thus, it is essential to find appropriate solutions. Various ideas for solving this issue were reviewed, including the reuse and recycling of plastics. Recycling plastics changes their quality, but the need for continued plastic production remains. Regarding this matter, it was decided to focus on the biodegradation of plastics so that their constituent materials can safely re-enter the environmental material cycle and be used again as high-quality, suitable plastics. Although this research is still in its early stages, it is hoped that in the future, effective and diverse solutions will be provided to address this issue.
