Abstract
The book Zero Waste Living in 30 Days provides practical strategies to help readers adopt a sustainable lifestyle and reduce waste. Anita Vandyke, the author, promotes zero waste, minimalism, and green living through her blog and Instagram. The book highlights the environmental harm caused by waste, such as the long decomposition periods of materials and the production of methane in landfills, which intensify the greenhouse effect and global warming. By offering actionable tips, the book encourages readers to reduce waste in their daily lives. Recommendations include composting, minimizing food waste, buying second-hand items, and embracing minimalism. Vandyke emphasizes the need for strong commitment, as without belief, these actions may be forgotten. The book is structured into two parts—“Thinking and Acting” and “Reflection and Review” over 30 days, and is accessible to a general audience. The author argues that small, consistent actions can lead to significant environmental changes, making individuals environmental advocates in their daily lives.
Highlights
Personal Reflection: While the book effectively simplifies environmental challenges and inspires change, I believe its 30-day plan and 80% waste reduction target are overly ambitious for most people. Breaking long-term habits, like reducing plastic waste or switching to homemade products, is not easy within such a short period. However, the book successfully raises awareness and highlights how small, mindful steps can lead to meaningful changes. Protecting our planet, as Vandyke reminds us, is a collective responsibility since Earth is our only home.
