Abstract

To address the ever-increasing consumption of paper and paper products, there is a need for more paper production. Through recycling, natural resources can be conserved, and the emission of pollutants into the environment can be reduced. However, the recycling process also presents several challenges. This review study examines the statistics of paper recycling in Iran and globally, as well as the problems and risks associated with this industry. The study’s findings indicate that the wastewater pollutants from paper mills contain a significant amount of harmful substances, the most notable of which are chlorine compounds. The challenges of paper recycling in Iran can be categorized into the low recycling rate, the poor quality of produced paper, the rough surface of cardboard, inadequate production equipment, and a lack of public and social awareness.
